Between rising prices, pickier taste, dwindling time and space, forgetting which issue I need, and just plain not going to bookstores that often, I don't buy much manga at all these days. However, there's something about Half-Price Books that destroys my willpower, and so here we have my newest addition.

We're introduced to Yuri, Kumi, and Kasumi- three elementary school girls selected for the "alien party," which apparently involves putting a symbiotic winged frog alien called a 'borg on your head in order to fight less benevolent aliens. Rollerblades are also part of the uniform. It's one of those stories that makes me wonder how much it fits the author's fetishes. Anyway, Yuri is really not a fan of the gross aliens, which is fair. Kumi (why are there two light haired girls with such similar names) appears to be the cool one, and took the job because she was tired of being class president. We also learn that the 'borg can go out of control, and that's bad because we don't wanna *kill* the bad aliens. It seems the aliens are a recent development.

We get a quick peek into everybody's home lives through a teacher visit, and it seems that something deeper is going on- the kids here and elsewhere are being scouted for something, and the the teachers are setting these incidents up themselves. Also, a buncha other 'borg attack Yuri, although the other two are able to bail her out....until she gets triple teamed, and her 'borg goes berserk and kills a buncha stuff and makes her hair weird. Luckily, the 'borg can reincarnate or something, but the teacher is in hot water for letting that happen, and Yuri is pretty bummed out. They do a summer vacation montage, though, and she's able to get herself together.

There's an ad in here for an anime con in 2003. I would've guessed this was a 90s thing, but sure. One of the previous guests was Rudy Giuliani.

My rating: 7/10
This was as weird as it looked, but I kinda liked it! The art is creepy, cool, and cute in turns as needed. A lot of stuff was left unexplained, even in the basic worldbuilding, but in a way that keeps you curious. I do get a slightly sleazy vibe from the premise and the author interview, but nothing unsavory actually happened, so I'll give it the benefit of the doubt.
