#27:

A dying message informs Astro and #44 that the diamonds are cursed and have a giant guardian robot. Maria and her posse show up and claim the diamonds while Astro searches for a way to disable the guard robot. When the city's defense mechanisms kick in, Astro is forced to destroy the core...causing the whole city to explode with everybody but Astro and #44 inside. Astro and #44 return to earth, and #44 is given a dog-like body to go back to being Pero.

We conclude with a short story, introduced by Tezuka as one of his favorites. Astro tells his friends about a special flower that commemorates a visit from an alien. The alien warns about a ship from Alsoa 12, which we find out is a recently exploded star. There's a robot invasion from Alsoa 12 the next day, trying to take Earth's water because their planet is gone. The boy is the last organic survivor, and he is powerless to stop the robots...but it's nothing Astro can't stop. The boy stays behind and takes the form of a flower. In the present, Astro and his gang leave him to bloom in the snow.

My rating: 7/10
Wasn't super my thing, but I was impressed with the tone for a children's manga. Both the long and short stories left me with a sense of bittersweetness. The storytelling itself was pretty straightforward, but went in some interesting directions. That's what makes him Tezuka, I guess!

Discussion question: What's your oldest manga/anime?
Hint for next: Probably still my favorite after all these years.
