Yeah, i think the difference is that Mjolnr was a weapon designed for Thor to help focus his powers. We never saw it happen in the MCU, but ostensibly the hammer would have also granted the powers of Thor to someone else, were they worthy and tried to wield it.

Stormbreaker is a very powerful weapon that requires someone with powers on the level of Thor to even wield. If someone without the powers of Thor or powers equal to them tried to wield Stormbreaker, it wouldn't have granted them power, it would have destroyed them.

It does kind of feel odd for him to seek a new weapon right after dealing with losing his old one, but it's an interesting distinction in purpose. I'm curious to see what might happen in the future. Thanos almost certainly would not have been able to wield Mjolnr, but I wonder if he could wield Stormbreaker? It sounds like he could, but almost noone else we've seen could.
