Parrots are hella smart. Some can communicate at the level of a human child, including the ability to learn to read. (Not sure if it's published yet, but there's an upcoming peer-reviewed scientific article on this by one Jennifer Cunha to look out for.)


I attended this one lecture where the scientist spoke about teaching her pet parrot Alex to communicate and to do multiplication. She also talked about this one moment, when she was leaving the lab, Alex asked her if she would come back tomorrow. She said of course she would, but that night Alex passed away. The lecture has always left an impression to me since.
