Once upon a time every studio dreamed of a $100 million opening, but in 2018 the $103 million Solo pulled down in its first four days has to be considered a bit of a disappointment. Rouge One and its $155 mil start was considered incredible at the time and only looks more spectacular in hindsight; clearly having only 5 months between Star Wars releases instead of the usual 12 was a mistake, and I doubt Disney will repeat it. (Though rumors of the movie's troubled filming and reshoots surely held it back as well.)

Also not quite up to par: Deadpool's large 57% drop in its second weekend. DP2 still made $54 million for a new total of $219, which is highly respectable, but its now fallen over 20 mil behind the pace of DP1 and is clearly being hurt by this month's tough competition. Speaking of which, Avengers was the weekend's bright spot, continuing to astound by dropping only 24% despite two huge new releases displacing it in most screens across the continent.

Overall the holiday weekend came in at around $220 million- one of the better showings for the year but nowhere near the $400 we saw at the launch of both Black Panther and Infinity War.

Things finally cool off next weekend with no major releases, but after that its back to Blockbuster Season with Ocean's 8/Incredibles 2/Jurassic World all looking to have huge openings in June.
