I find it odd that we have 3 different conferences so far and they all showed off a mobile game.

In spite of having been opened to the public and developing such a strong online presence, E3 is and always was an industry trade show - which means the goal isn't necessarily to show games to the general public that they're likely to like/enjoy/want, as much as it is to show off your current projects to other developers, reviewers, and press (and, to some extent, to your own stockholders). Which means you aren't necessarily going to run presentations the same way you'd run a pure PR campaign directed at your target consumers.

About a decade or so ago, Triple-A developers discovered they can make more money in mobile games than almost any other alternative - on an almost obscene scale. Which is part of why their development plans for the last couple of years have increasingly been to shoehorn manipulative mobile game-style microtransactions into full-priced games, so they can double dip on profit while fucking the consumer from both ends.

So that mentality is reflected in which games they're going to show. Even if that's likely to engender something of a negative response from the average hardcore gamer nerd watching presentations online. Because it's not really FOR us, in any way. It's for the millions of casual gamers who may not even know what E3 is, and certainly wouldn't care enough to pay attention to it even if they did.
