Like in DBZ, someone attacks Frieza and they think they got him but when the dust clears it turns out he's not even scratched because he has a bigger number. That's something you see a lot of in DBZ, or at least think of when you picture the cliches. I think by the Cell Saga they work on the formula so it doesn't happen to quite the same extent. It's fine if they throw up a barrier or something, or do something more tangible like withstanding punches, just not being naturally immune to giant energy beams from lower level fighters. The fakeout isn't even convincing.
