so how's all this nonsense work?

When you click on your trainer's icon, it defaults to the old section which is listed as "Me" at the top but next to it is a section marked "Friends." If you click on it, you can hit a button for "Add Friend" which displays your trainer ID and lets you input another trainer's ID. When an ID is input, it sends out an invite that the other trainer has to accept or reject. It's a fucking stupidly long process, especially because the system seems to freeze up at times and it takes a while to process invites.

Once you have somebody added, you can click on their name to send them a gift (which you get from Pokestops and gyms -- supposedly you can only hold 5 at a time right now). By sending an item, when they opened the item it upgraded my status to "Good Friend" with them (1star). 2star and above have bonuses for raids, gym attacking, etc.

The trading system is pretty useful. If you have junk-IV uncommon/rare Pokemon, you can trade them to a friend and you both get candy from the trade. (And more candy if it was caught far away -- not sure if it relates to the distance between Pokemon or from the catch location to the trade location.) Did a few Feebas with a friend yesterday, but I guess we couldn't re-trade them afterward. Completely killed the IVs but they kinda sucked anyway.
