If you re-invest your revenue in costs then it is deductible from your taxable income. Amazon re-invests all their revenue so they are at $0 or negative profit.


To put that in other terms, amazon uses their net revenue to do things like buy Whole Foods, issue company stock, or pay down corporate debt. So at the end of the year they haven't actually made any money.

edit: I should add that we are taking about federal corporate income tax. They've been paying state sales tax for a while now


I guess that's better than the internet would lead you to believe (shocker) but it still seems pretty lousy. Growing bigger and more diversified all the time and paying no corporate income tax in the process. I get that's how the system is set up but its just kind of scary.
