Unfortunately, the evolution of t-rex made it into a fearsome, and large predator, perfect for killing and eating up other dinosaurs, while being able to defend itself from others.

When the extinction event happened that led to the end of dinosaurs walking the earth, the T-Rex was unable to adapt quickly enough as most of its food source went away. The big ones most certainly would have died, but perhaps the smallest t-rex were able to survive, slowly evolving into smaller creatures and maybe becoming some of the birds we know today. That is just one possibility, they might have all died out.
