The mistake you're making is assuming that race, gender, sexuality, religion, etc. are not important to peoples' identities. The problem with saying that race shouldn't matter is that it does. And not always in a negative manner. We are in complete agreement that people shouldn't be judged arbitrarily according to these identifiers, but these identifiers are important, mostly to the people they identify. A black kid cares that he is black. It is a part of who he is. Just like sexuality, religion, etc...
