In the months after that happened, he looked back on the whole ordeal (and the bar incident in particular) as rather enlightening. He was fond of saying afterwards, "No one knows the shit you're going through and much less do they care." No one is responsible for your bad day except you. You are not owed any preferential treatment or consideration because something shitty has happened to you. Yeah, the guy's back was strained and he was in pain... and maybe the mother hadn't got any sleep last night because one of her kids was up all night puking.
