No one goes gets arrested or goes to jail for not having liability insurance. Don't make things up. Liability insurance is super inexpensive. You can find companies that provide it for $20 a month. And if you can't afford that then don't have a car. You're not entitled to drive around damaging people's cars and injuring them in accidents without being able to compensate them if it's your fault.

It's not a "poor person tax." That's ridiculous. The reason it likely became mandatory is situations like this where the offending party didn't have insurance but definitely couldn't pay and the party that sustained the damages needed to take on a burden that wasn't theirs to begin with. Driving a car on the road is a privilege not a right. You don't have the right to injure people and damage their cars with no consequence. I'd rather people have insurance than have them start having to go to jail because we don't have mandatory insurance.
