And some studies have suggested that the ideal amount of sleep for working-age adults is actually 6.5 hours, including ones which studied modern hunter-gatherer societies.

Also keep in mind that over-sleeping is harmful so you aren't really erring on the side of caution with 8 hours any more than you err on the side of caution by taking extra medicine to treat an illness or by overeating.
