Another thing to consider with Marcellas though, as dumb as his move was, the "golden" veto had no precedent at that point. Veto was new that season and "golden" was new that week. Every other veto prior could not be used on the holder even if they were a nominee, and no nominee had won it before Marcellas. His move is still dumb, but it's more shortsighted dumb. If someone did the same thing today, it would be exponentially stupider because everyone knows the basics of the game by now. Back then, it wasn't the basics yet. Marcellas was the first player to ever have the opportunity to veto themselves off the block. Intuitively, he should have known "better safe than sorry" but saying it was the dumbest move ever would be like saying the dumbest survivor move ever was Pagong all voting individually at the merge. Bad move? Yes, but there was no blueprint of how to succeed at the game. Hindsight is 20/20.

I think Mike was worse. He was warned "you don't knock it off, you're going up." He ignored that and his reasoning was "even if I go up, I can plead that my dumb move was out of loyalty and therefore I should stay because I've proven to keep my word." That logic doesn't hold up in game that's 8 seasons in. Marcellas' logic wasn't better by any means, but in Mike's case, more resources were available on what to do or not do in the game. Marcellas was presented a situation that was at the time unique and he made the wrong choice. He let emotion make his decision instead of logic. That happens. Mike used counterintuitive garbage logic and ignored a direct warning from the person whose hands his fate was in. it was like running across a busy highway using the logic "well if I get hit by a car, I've got an insurance settlement coming my way. Free money! If not? Meh. No harm done."
