Fair warning, FGO has one of the worst gacha rates in the industry. It is truly abysmal. You can spend hundreds of dollars whaling for something and never see what you're after. I used to play it but it was just too unforgiving in that regard. So many games do it better. Frankly, if you're *not* a fan of the Fate franchise I wouldn't recommend sticking with it. The thing it does best is Fate fanservice. Without that there simply a lot better games to play.

I've heard it does have really low rates, but then I also heard that's balanced out by lesser servants still being really useful.

That game gets dramatically harder as you go along. As you start out it's pretty easy. But the later chapters get pretty tough. I mean, it's up to you if you want to play it but it's an older game and it lacks of quality of life features newer games have. In terms of gatcha. The rate for 5 stars is 1%. Then when you get a 5 star it chooses one between all the available ones and then gives you one. So even if you pull a 5 star the one you're after will only have a boosted rate so you still might not get it. There is no pity timer or anything.

Let me tell you my FGO ragequit story. I had a decent team of 2 good 5 stars and I just needed this particular 5 star to complete my ideal team. So I saved all the tickets and quartz I got for, what was it, like 6 months? The day came that the servant I needed to complete my team was released. I went for it. Used every ticket I had and every single quartz I had saved....nothing. So, in my desperation, I started to whale. I'm not going to say just how much money I spent whaling but lets just say it's very embarrassing. And you know what? Didn't get shit. And then I ragequit and never returned. It's a common FGO story.

In hindsight, the smart way to play FGO is not to pick ideal teams or waifus and instead is to just work with whatever you happen to get. But for me, someone who likes to min-max and go after specific teams/characters, such a playstyle is too limiting to really be much fun. Things like Alchemist Code, FEH and Girls Frontline are just a lot more fair. But it's you're time. Do what you want with it. Just a warning.
