The value of the "weird" Community episodes is that it allows the show to explore aspects of characters you don't normally explore on shows. An episode where you can just say, "Hey, Annie is the villain" is big jump from "Annie is just naive and jealous of people who didn't fuck up their own lives", but it somehow fits perfectly into the series and allows me as a viewer to think of these characters as if the genre choice is a prism to look at their motivations differently. At least, that's how I always felt about them. Mileage may vary of course. I never could finish Breaking Bad, and I recognize it's very well-loved.
