The Umineko anime announcement was mostly met with dread from the game's fanbase. Though the Higurashi anime has its fans (myself included, spoilers), it left a lot out of the games and changed a lot of stuff for the anime. The early Umineko games are a lot longer than the early Higurashi games too (and also better - Higurashi was more of a late bloomer, so it was relatively easy to cut stuff from early arcs), so it would be more painful to make the cuts to make the anime work. Still, I was a little bit hopeful. They were using music from the games, which was awesome, and it would be cool to see the characters voiced, plus the battles could be cool animated. Unfortunately, the anime was a failure in pretty much every aspect. Rather than changing things to fit the medium better, the anime was totally faithful to the VN, but because of the low episode count, a lot of important scenes were cut out. Everything feels super rushed. Higurashis poor animation sucked, but it wasnt really that big a deal, since the show was mostly atmosphere and conversations. Umineko had actual battles and such, so having those look terrible was painful. Mostly, I feel like they just missed the feel of the series. The voices were good, but the atmosphere wasnt there. It felt like they had no idea how to adapt things, or what the themes of the series were. One of the weirdest parts was when they adapted a 20 minutes scene from the VN into a full episodeand then the next episode condensed the two hour ending on the game into a single episode. I mean, the scene they did was good and all, but what the hell were they thinking? The ending was full of scenes people loved, and they were barely there. Watching Umineko was just sad.

At least the OP was good, I guess.
