I know a lot of people are super into the premise of Planetes, but it never appealed to me that much. I like my sci-fi to be over the top and awesome. When I hear people complaining about too much Jedi in Star Wars, or saying they want to see more ordinary people, I dont really get it. Thankfully, Planetes is a pretty well written series, so it manages to be decently enjoyable regardless. The team is a pretty good mix of personalities. The more experienced workers are all pretty great, and Ai makes for a cool protagonist. Seeing her grow and get better throughout the series wouldve been pretty great, I think. Sadly, thats not what the series is about. The show switches gears to focus on Hachi, who is by far the worst character in the show. Not only is he a huge asshole to everyone for no reason, hes incredibly boring. Nothing about him is particularly unique or interesting. The second half of the show does have the advantage of shifting to focus on the Jupiter mission, which is rather more interesting than garbage collection, but I couldnt really cheer for Hachi during this part since hes a piece of garbage himself. I checked out the manga for this one too, since Id heard it was pretty different, but it was actually a fairly faithful adaptation. The manga has a lot more weird no-dialogue sequences about the nature of space, which didnt really add anything to the series, so not adapting those is hardly a failing of the anime.
