Actually, while I'm thinking about it, same question for this:
Surgeon/Ship's Physician - does "Physician" feel appropriate for the Age of Sail? Or is that a bit too "modern"? If both are acceptable, would Surgeon be more pirate-y while physician is more merchant-y, or the other way around?

I was always under the impression that in that era the best you could hope for was a barber/bonesaw. I wasn't aware "surgeon" was technically a thing prior to germ theory being accepted since in that era it was unthinkable to ask a "doctor" to wash his hands prior to reaching into a wound because a gentleman was not "dirty" and it was beyond the pale to insinuate such to the point where a duel would be the result of such a claim.
Bonesaws were also expensive, because the army needed them so often. ---
