and he is that type of player ("I'm the main character whether you like it or not")

I feel like I'd go out of my way to push him back, and actively point out that the game is a group effort. Then if he still keeps pushing that way, then just murder his PC and/or boot him from the game.

Having one PC sort of grab the spotlight as the obvious "leader" of a group is fine if most of the other players are more passive and willing to be supporting cast in someone else's story (or are just uncomfortable being center-stage themselves), but if it feels like they're just being a selfish attention hog I'm less likely to give them what they want solely to punish them for being an asshole.

I'm very much of the mindset that RP is a cooperative game, and even the GM exists as someone to help you tell a great story rather than an adversarial presence who is trying to "beat" you, but in the same vein I view problem players AS adversaries who it is my job to punish precisely because they ruin stories and experiences for everyone else.

I want players to have stories they can remember and reminisce about for years to come, and tell war stories about awesome things that happened to their characters, not just talk about how someone else's character did cool things while they were also there.

To coin a LOTR comparison, I want every player to be Aragon or Frodo, but I don't want anyone to be Pippin (unless they really want to be).
