The hate kind of made sense back in the day as the original version had some ridiculous animation errors, it got overexposed due to one of the big licensors using Geist as their mascot, and people were expecting everything to be the next Akira or Ghost in the Shell when MD Geist isn't even even trying at that. It's just a lovably dumb and violent action anime with an awesome soundtrack, a rather distinctive main character (everyone who's not Geist basically sucks though), and a neat twist. I think it succeeds pretty well on its own terms. And given that the Director's Cut version fixes most of the errors and helps fill out the plot a little, the option to still watch the original to laugh at it can only be a plus nowadays.
