The fact that you've even seen this is a nice surprise (not enough people have, I'm still sad that this is mostly known for the atrocious dub even though the Netflix subs are fine), and I enjoyed the write-up too. Aiko is one of my favorite anime characters because I felt she approached the situation realistically and with a good amount of strength. The rest of the cast isn't anywhere near as good, but I didn't think any of them were bad either. Like you, I also enjoyed the structure of the plot being mostly a mission with a singular, defined goal. I quite liked the action as well. They may have been fighting blob monsters but the combat still quite often dealt with matters of positioning, which I feel is often ignored in action in anime. Anyway, consistent is still a good word to describe it even if the individual parts of it resonated more with me than they did for you.
