Harukana Receive
This year another show, Horse Girl or whatever it was aired and I want to compare that to this one. While I do think this show is better overall I do think it suffers a similar issue where as a "sports" show I don't really get that feeling where I'm really invested in any of the matches. Take shows like Haikyuu or Chihayafuru where each match is just edge of your seat intense because of directing and due to them building up the characters to make you even more invested. I do think this show does a decent job at character development overall, but it never reaches that point where I'm excited for the volleyball. Like while Horse Girl was about the moe first and the racing second this is 100% about the fan service first and the volleyball second. So lets talk about the fan service. Unlike demon lord, the fan service here is not the ecchi kind but more the a bunch of girls in bikinis all the time with some advantageous camera angles. I actually really like the designs overall in this anime and from like a pure attractiveness factor this probably has the best looking girls of the season overall. But that's still not really enough to pull it up from being just a pretty okay show imo. Keijo, another fan service sports type show proved you can both have your fan service and sports type action that makes you invested in the outcome.

Banana Fish
This is one of the few shows airing that will have episodes in the future. TBH I don't like it nearly as much as I did early on when it was pushing for best new show. I think some of the character development has been a little iffy and I'm finding it hard to get invested in the plot right now. I still think it's a good show, but something that is going to have to pick it up next season if it wants to avoid MAPPAs track record of pushing out disappointments.

Seven Senses of the ReUnion
This is an amazon prime show that like no one realizes exists. It's kind of a cross between SAO and Ano Hana. It manages to avoid the dumb pitfalls those shows had though which gave me hope that maybe this would not be awful. While I don' think it's awful it does suffer from several problems. The main one being that they just take too long to do anything. They dwell on like one plot point for the entire season and just don't get anywhere with it. They take too long for the main cast to really get together too. I do think that some of the character stuff they do, while a decent attempt, is just stretched out too much to fill in a lack of actual content.

Cells at Work
While I don't think this is like quite as good as the early episodes had it slated for, I do think this is one of the best shows of this season. I think the real main downfall is that it doesn't really do enough to really make the characters stick with you besides very simple gimmicks related to their real life body functions. That's not to say that Red Blood Cell and White Blood Cell are not great, but Cells at Work doesn't really have the comedy level to make up for what the show lacks overall either. Still an excellent anime though and one you should 100% watch if you're like one of the 3 people in the world who hasn't yet.

Asobi Asobase
IMO Asobi Asobase stands apart in a season full of good comedy. It might be the best physical humor anime I've ever seen. Now where it stands among this year in terms of comedy is a different thing, but the sketches in this show were hilarious. This has a legitimate chance at comedy of the year (or would if Takagi-san didn't also air and pretty much as that locked up for me).
