It is interesting to see though that the actual licensed properties apparently meant nothing in terms of sales. It was entirely the TTG brand that sold/didnt sell.

I actually think that the licensed brands meant a whole lot, but in a different way than you think.

It looks like as time went on, they opted for more and more well-known source material. Not that anything they chose was particularly obscure, but on a global scale there's gotta be a gigantic difference in the number of people who are familiar with Fables and Game of Thrones, and then an even further difference between Game of Thrones and Batman. And it looks like the more mainstream the source material got, the worse the sales were. TWD is the exception because it was the breakout franchise for the genre, but the point is still kept afloat by BttF and Jurassic Park, two highly mainstream franchises, selling just as poorly as the later titles.

My theory is that this genre already has an established fanbase that is unlikely to garner a significant number of new fans ever again. So when a game like Batman comes out, it's unlikely to draw in existing Batman fans who aren't genre fans, while many genre fans may go, "another Batman game? I'll pass." But when something a little less mainstream comes along, it intrigues them.

Hence why I think they should have tried out a couple of original IPs.
