Okay, people are really trying to stir the pot on this thing without contextualizing it at all. Typical outrage culture I guess but let me at least try to stop it so I don't need to see it here.

This has been a thing since DMC4, and it's the same weird kind of "pay to get ahead in a single player game" dlc that's shoved into the back of the Playstation Store for a ton of games. Like, you've probably played a bunch of games that have this in them and never even realized it. Just for example, every modern entry of the Tales series has had this.

Don't get me wrong, I think this kind of stuff is really stupid and I can't fathom what kind of people pay for these things, but we've seen how this looks hundreds of times over. It doesn't actually affect the games at all, it's just free (albeit skeevy) money for the publishers.

Edit: I should clarify that my last statement there only applies to Japanese-produced games, in case anyone wants to bring up the Shadow of War example. Yes we've seen this approach get really nasty in the west because certain significantly more evil publishers here like to get devs to actually change their games to encourage purchases of this kind of thing. We're this far in to the age of DLC though and I can't name any Japanese studio that's crippled a game on purpose to sell this kind of DLC, even though a ton of games have had it.
