It's a facet of cultural socialization, and part of what makes us human in the first place.

Like it or not, social norms are constructed via consensus, and things like guilt, shame, and embarrassment are used to enforce said norms and maintain the social contract. We have an instinct to mock (or worse) those who are different from what we think people should be with the assumption that doing so will force them to conform.

Success often excuses eccentricity, but most of the time the nail that stands up is going to get the shit hammered out of it.
