The concept, ideas and references are extremely subtle, and without a solid grasp of Jungian psychology, Freudian thought, and religious symbolism most of the references will go over a typical gamer's head. There's also Fei's pacifist outlook, which is deftly woven into his characterization- his personal philosophy draws heavily from the works and philosophies of Friedrich Nietzsche, Sigmund Freud and Carl Jung, for instance. The fans understand this stuff; they have the intellectual capacity to truly appreciate the depths of these references, to realize that they're not just references- they say something deep about where do we come from, what are we, where are we going. As a consequence people who dislike Xenogears truly are unfortunate people who are missing out- of course they wouldn't appreciate, for instance, the reference in Fei's existential crisis with his alter-egos, which itself is a cryptic reference to Freudian ideas of the id, ego and super-ego. I'm smirking right now just imagining Soraya Saga and Tetsuya Takahashi's genius wit unfolding itself on my television screen. How I pity the ones who have never experienced the full joy of Xenogears. I want a statistic diagram and spreadsheet of all this BS. --- Don't like it? Don't watch it.
