To be fair, you have to have an extremely high IQ to understand Xenogears. The concept, ideas and references are extremely subtle, and without a solid grasp of Jungian psychology, Freudian thought, and religious symbolism most of the references will go over a typical gamer's head. There's also Fei's pacifist outlook, which is deftly woven into his characterization- his personal philosophy draws heavily from the works and philosophies of Friedrich Nietzsche, Sigmund Freud and Carl Jung, for instance. The fans understand this stuff; they have the intellectual capacity to truly appreciate the depths of these references, to realize that they're not just references- they say something deep about where do we come from, what are we, where are we going. As a consequence people who dislike Xenogears truly are unfortunate people who are missing out- of course they wouldn't appreciate, for instance, the reference in Fei's existential crisis with his alter-egos, which itself is a cryptic reference to Freudian ideas of the id, ego and super-ego. I'm smirking right now just imagining Soraya Saga and Tetsuya Takahashi's genius wit unfolding itself on my television screen. How I pity the ones who have never experienced the full joy of Xenogears.

And yes, by the way, I DO have a Xenogears tattoo. And no, you cannot see it. It's for my wife's eyes only- and even then she had to demonstrate that she was within 5 IQ points of my own (preferably higher) and a strong knowledge of Perfect Works beforehand. I also owe my vast fortune to Xenogears because without it I would have never be as successful as I have been.

I have been trying to say this myself too because of some of the people who disliked Xenogears thought it was all pretentious (which honestly gamers throw that word around alot, and they're just cheapening what it really means) didn't seem to get idea behind this game.

This game was made for people who do enjoy a good complex storyline that can make you think, you can't get that experience anymore due to the market now having changed for the worse.
