The student loan debt fiasco is mostly from insane room and board costs, which is also linked to the insane rent prices we see these days (1 bedroom for something small like 600 square feet is usually around 1400 in most cities, well in the 2ks for places like Cali and NY obviously).

So much of student loans goes to the housing and "meal plans", crap like that. Most public universities have tuition that is still semi affordable if you work part time...and live at home. Thats what I did and finished grad school with no debt. Took me 1 extra year of both undergrad and grad school though.

This also means you live within driving distance of a university, and many college towns are just that though (most major cities do have good universities too though). It also hinders your social life for obvious reasons.

As someone from the state with the two highest Public University tuitions in the country (PSU and Pitt). I am honestly considering moving to another state when my child is 16 due to it.
