What this song falls victim to are two things that other songs on this list also get hit by: I feel it repeats itself too often ("a little bit" comes up 12 times during the song, particularly six times in rapid succession during each pre-chorus) and the artist was too honest in explaining what things meant.

There was a good theory that the song was called Prom because it was a Broken Promise. Ya know, symbolism and what not. But she set the record straight:

"Iss called prom cus I ain't have no friends in high school so I went to Miami w my mama for prom instead . Lol"

At which point, I no longer cared about the song. If the artist herself is going to dismiss the concept of any symbolism or meaning with a "Lol", then I'm going to be equally dismissive of the song.

And you'll probably argue that she only ruined the title of her song, not all of the lyrics, which...yeah, that's probably fair, but I will always argue that it was still a bad move on her part.]

i don't think repetition is inherently bad! it's a commonly used rhetorical device to convey emphasis and while the repetition in some works could be criticized as lazy or whatnot, i wouldn't exactly say that's the case here. this is by far the catchiest song on the album and in addition to playing into that smooth accessible vibe, the repetition here emphasizes the speaker's need for the "it pourin" in the previous line to be "just a little bit." The pressure of being an adult and the responsibilities that come with it are overwhelming the speaker and she needs it to only be "just a little bit" because she doesn't want to (or can't) take it all at once and the need for the (inevitable?) acceptance to come gradually is evident.

i wasn't aware of the promise theory and i didn't know about that answer the artist gave on the title of the song but if anything, that answer does give the title symbolic significance because the song isn't about an actual prom. the title reflects the feelings of carefree indulgence and finality of adolescence that is associated with the event which are present in the song.
