I remember saying years ago that Conservatives aren't really conservative anymore, and Liberals are no longer liberal. It still holds true. Liberal just means forward thinking. The thinking of the day has changed, so liberal thought must change. The only thing conservative here is your definition of liberal. It's 2018, time to accept that we know better than we used to.
