If you get a paper cut you could theoretically die from it if the right scenarios played out. So when you run to the doctor and ask if you're going to die from the paper cut and he says you aren't going to die, he doesn't know that, but he can infer that the probability of you dying is minimal to the point of being able to say you shouldn't worry about dying. If you have something terminal you're going to die from it and there is nothing you can do about it. But for anything else your attitude plays a large factor into your recovery. If you had a form of cancer that has a low chance of survival your doctor should of informed you of such. Since he didn't you should trust his judgment and stay positive about the situation.
