Well I also went ahead and finished Revue Starlight because I still had one episode left.

I thought that was an amazing story. I can see why it might not appeal to everyone but all the themes it explored spoke deeply to me (creative struggle, seeking perfection, the connection between people... I could go on). This is an anime where enough care has been put into every aspect of it that even the tiniest details are dripping with symbolism, and I love picking apart stuff like that. I also loved all of the characters. They were each unique, and the episodes somehow managed to showcase both who they were and their relationships in satisfying ways.

The final episode was what really managed to pull it all together though, and what finally managed to have this break my top 10 and become a true 10/10 anime, but I'll put those thoughts into spoilers. I just really liked how it brought all the themes together. Starlight was a powerful story to Karen, to the point where it existed within her beyond the confines of what was written. She was able to imagine that narrative continuing beyond the 'end', where the character recovered from the tragedy and found a happy ending. Resonating with someone on that level is the highest goal of fiction, I think, and the fact that the story meant that much to her really came across for me.

I also liked the thematic rebuke of the whole 'people have a finite amount of glimmer' or whatever. I took that whole aspect to describe how actors are expected to give everything they have to a performance, and that is draining... but the well fills back up again. There are always other performances, so Karen could try again as many times as it took to rescue Hikari. There's more thematic stuff I could talk about but I think I've said enough already to make it clear how much I loved this. I also feel like, despite how many deep things I noticed, there are whole layers that I didn't manage to catch on this first viewing. I'm going to love rewatching this again someday.

Anyway, yeah. This was the best anime of Summer, 10/10, would recommend.
