I wouldnt expect them to grasp it fully. But a lot of trans people have said from a young age they felt different or weird and it carried on throughout their life.

I'm not advocating for any permanent changes that early such as genital surgery, but being supportive? absolutely. it either passes or just as likely doesn't pass. if it passes you were still respectful to your child, and if a few years down the line they're the same way then pursue the options you have.
