I wouldnt expect them to grasp it fully. But a lot of trans people have said from a young age they felt different or weird and it carried on throughout their life.

I'm not advocating for any permanent changes that early such as genital surgery, but being supportive? absolutely. it either passes or just as likely doesn't pass. if it passes you were still respectful to your child, and if a few years down the line they're the same way then pursue the options you have.

Being "supportive" is where we get into the interesting gray area.

Is it "supportive" to refer to your 5 year old son as a "she" just because they say so....?? Or is that "submission to their demands"? Because I can see it both ways. And it's essential that you maintain your position as the parent...and not let them walk all over you and make the rules. But you should also hear out their thoughts and feelings. But you can't have it both ways sometimes.

That's why it's a more complicated issue than it seems on the surface.

And there are parents out there who would genuinely think you are a total fucking monster if you DON'T start referring to your 5 year old son as a "she" the moment they ask.

But parents should also be intelligent enough to realize that all the thoughts and feelings of a 5 year old should be taken with a grain of salt.

Oh wait, but that's insensitive?

So which one is it?

Ahhhhh!
