I had an odd encounter this morning at Dunkin Donuts where after trying to confirm my order was made with whole milk and sugar I was told plainly that "it's a machiato" as if that answered my question. This prompted a conversation with a friend about the theory that some of the people you meet on a daily basis are NPCs in a simulation just going through dialog trees, and if you deviate from the programed responses they'll error out in a way similar to what had just happened.

I then got to thinking about how often I parrot back someone's greeting when I have no subject for conversation prepared or otherwise go through the typical responses with someone when I hadn't been the one to initiate the conversation.

I might be an NPC.
We all might be NPCs at certain times.
