well it's easiest to think of it as Japan's Hawaii. There are Okinawan people (Uchinanchu) that were forcefully colonized and integrated into Japanese society. These days there's a lot of mixed Japanese/Okinawan people here, so the point that it's largely indistinguishable. Like I have one student that's half Filipino and he's called a "Haafu" but nobody with any degree of Uchinanchu in them is ever called out for it. Even though it does give them a darker complexion, yes.

Differences... Okinawa is the poorest prefecture, and also the one with the longest lived people. We credit our active lifestyle and fresh foods (especially goya).

In the undokai I'm playing the Taiko (drum) for several events, like giving a marching rhythm, and also playing during a few races to hype up the crowd. I'm also participating in the Ondo () which is like a dance. Then on the athletic front, I'm in the tsunahiki (tug of war) match representing my town.
