So how do I make friends in college? I don't just walk up to random people and say "hi" and intrude on what they were occupied with doing before I showed up, do I?

Play something that requires you to talk to other people, card games, board games, RPGs, that sort of thing.
Then go to some sort of meetup for that, 99.9% of schools have some sort of gaming club, you can show up, learn new games, talk to people.

Don't think of games as the main focus, think of it like social lubricant. During downtimes in conversation you can think more about the game, you can talk about the game itself as conversation filler (plus games are built to be fun, they're pretty fun to talk about), and you can quickly figure out if you want to talk to a person or not.

There are also computer clubs, which I hear are basically just people sitting around goofing around near computers.

Also, people are pretty chill if you fuck up socially, as long as you're honest about you fucking up, apologize for it, and then let it drop. Focusing on making sure everything is pristine just doesn't move the conversation at all, always be moving.
