Didn't they already start down that story arc before it was cancelled though? I think they were always going to make a big deal out of it, although presumably she was supposed to survive in the original arc

I wouldn't know, I only watched the first couple episodes of the reboot and that's it.

I wasn't talking about her having the injury and meds, It just seemed like the beginning of the episode included more specific references to her dying from an overdose than seemed necessary, almost like they were going out of their way to drive that point home. But I could be reading too much into it.
