Oh, he's a writer that thinks "said" is a dirty word. That does make sense.

Eh, I had someone (not Gog) explain that to me once and while it wasn't presented so much as a dirty or forbidden word, I got the general gist being that it just didn't add anything much as opposed to something that could communicate the manner in which it is said. Though I feel one could argue good diction alone would convey that.

But I do get the underlying point - Gog thought that a book should have flowery vernacular to the extremes. Which isn't inherently bad but it's one of those things that I feel like should be only used insofar as it contributes to the story somehow. If it's ultimately filler or there's a more succinct yet equally impactful way to say something ... it just doesn't serve a point.

That's one of my issues with The Scarlet Letter. I feel like the language and writing were superfluous for the sake of being superfluous. I do like the underlying plot, but god damn it's such a chore to read through. I wonder how a modern rewriting of the novel - keeping the underlying plot, just changing the diction, really - would go. If nothing else, it'd be easier to parse. >_>
