Topic	I've started playing Dark Souls for the first time! :D spoilers

I have some broken sword, and that flask thing to refill me energy a few times, but that is it. Why would the first area of the game be SO hard? I don't understand. Is there no way to avoid fighting the boss? Isn't this game supposed to be non-linear, so if one bit is too hard, or it's boring you, you can go something else instead?
