We don't see his reason for turning until TLJ (and even then we only see it devoid of all context), so his paranoid attitude towards his parents and the light side comes off as irrational and childish. Kind of the opposite problem that Vader had with the prequels. 2. Rey beats him in TFA. Though this was intended to make Rey seem amazing, it just had the effect of making Kylo look weak. Hence I've seen a lot of fans describe him as weak or incompetent, even when TLJ gives us multiple lines of dialogue specifically about how crazy powerful Kylo is (and TFA opens with him performing a never before seen force feat). --- ...
