The show did have an ending, the problem stemmed that the studio kept on renewing it with more seasons, with more seasons you have to add more plot devices and mysteries to get people more invested in your show. So when they pulled the plug, the writers were in a conundrum on how to end the show because they were assuming they had more time to tie loose ends. They decided to leave some things without a proper conclusion to not affect the story telling.
