It's been a while since i've played the games but i've beat them all and was pretty damn good at pvp/ If I remember correctly, being hollow means that you are devoid of humanity. You need to have humanity to summon NPC's or other players as allies or foes. You become hollow if you have died anytime after offering humanity at a bonfire.
