Greatsword is a hit and run weapon, and good usage of it requires a good feel for its charge timings and of how the monster behaves. It generally is a proactive weapon than a reactive one.

Hammer is sort of like this too, but has a lot more leniency because it can move while charging and it doesnt rely entirely on its charges to do good damage

A lot of the hits with the hammer's charge are based on boss prediction and knowing they'll leave themselves open at the right moment. The two bosses that have been a relative struggle so far have been the ones that like to go underground because hammer isn't fast enough to really pick at their openings most of the time.
