Seems like it's too similar to their current system, so they just default back.

Maybe see what happens if they play something way, way off the deep end?

I'd argue the opposite - it's probably more that they're not comfortable with or familiar with the new system, so they're trying to default back to the one they do know.

It was actually a similar issue with The Stolen Century arc of The Adventure Zone (which is why I mentioned it). They'd been playing D&D for a while, then switched to a different system mid-game, so they were all instinctively trying to do things the way they were used to doing them ("Can I do a skill check?" "No."), and felt somewhat lost with all the new rules. They eventually adapt, but it takes them time to get used to the new systems.

If he just jumped them into a radically different system, there's a good chance they'd just lose interest entirely. Some long-term RPer love switching from system to system often, but a lot of players just shut down when they have to learn an entirely new complex system every time they want to play.
