I think I was basically just completely out of the loop for Shin Megami Tensei, then when Persona spun off I kind of dismissed it out of hand because of the SMT tie, and because in my head I sort of confused it with Tecmo's Deception (which I played and really disliked). Then by the time the franchise sort of caught my attention again, it looked like someone had basically found a way to distill the entirety of Japanese anime culture down into liquid form and shot it directly into their veins.
