Wait, Australia is a country AND a continent? whooooah

Oceania lol. But Australia is a country

"Oceania" is a classification, not an actual continent. Australia itself IS a continent.

But arguments over what is and isn't a continent always get a bit messy regardless, because there's no official universal standard, and different places operate on different assumptions. It's why the US teaches that there are seven continents, but some cultures count "The Americas" as a single continent, and some treat "Eurasia" as a single continent, and some models assume that "Afro-Eurasia" is a single continent.

So depending on who you're talking to, there can be as many as seven continents or as few as four.

(And that's without getting into even messier distinctions that come into play when you consider plate tectonics, like the fact that India is technically on a separate plate than the rest of Asia, or how LA is essentially separate from the continental US and will eventually slide its way upwards towards Alaska)

Australia is a continent in almost every system, though.
