why would i want an x-box? especially first gen? that controller was a monstrosity

If you were an adult at the time, the S-controller was pretty much perfect for normal sized hands (something Nintendo still continues to not even remotely give a shit about).

The 360 controller was essentially the S-controller improved, streamlined, and turned wireless. Which basically made it one of my favorite controllers of all time.

Nah. Xbox is clearly the better console overall.

It's literally the worst console this generation for people who actually buy consoles to play games. Even many Xbox owners and fans will admit this.

And I say this as someone who considered the 360 the best console of last generation. Microsoft tanked hard this gen, just like Sony did when they screwed up the PS3 launch/gen after being so insanely dominant with the PS2.

Xbox wins in both these categories.

It really, really doesn't.

The controller issue is slightly more debatable - the basic Xbox One controller is worse than the 360's was, and it starts to push into problems by being a little chunkier (not quite as bad as The Duke yet, but less streamlined than the 360), but I could see people with overly large hands preferring it to the PS4. Then again, I'm 6'3" and have very large adult hands and I still prefer the Dual Shock 4 (its only flaw being the stupid touchpad, but that actually helps make the controller meatier, which is nice). So I'd argue for most actual humans, this is either a relative draw, or the PS4 wins.

When it comes to games, though, it's no contest. Most Xbox exclusives are crap, and even their most overhyped exclusive titles seem to be little more than a blip on the radar before disappearing out of most people's memory. Meanwhile, the PS4 has put out multiple exclusives that have been highly praised as some of the best games of this generation. Not having a PS4 means you miss out on a lot of worthwhile games. Not having an Xbox One means you missed out on the worst Halo game they've ever made, and the broken Master Chief Collection that they're only just getting around to fixing four years later. And this is made even worse by the fact that half of Microsoft's "exclusives" these days are available on PC anyway.

I'm not counting Nintendo in this comparison, because Nintendo is always sort of the weird kid sitting off in the corner doing his own thing, and how you wind up feeling about that depends almost entirely on how you feel about Nintendo's latest gimmick controller, and whether or not you give a shit about the 47th Zelda retread or the latest iteration of Mario-flavored games (spoiler alert: I do not). And also Pokemon if you are a filthy 90s kid. Kids and people living off Nintendo nostalgia are going to love Nintendo no matter what. People who don't really care about Nintendo aren't going to care about their latest "innovative" console, either.
